Sometimes the Best Night Could Be at a Rest Stop in Iowa

Good morning from Iowa.

Last night wasn’t spent at a campground with a lake view. There was no fire crackling outside, no mountain silhouette in the distance, and definitely no resort waiting on the other side of the door.

It was a rest stop.

And you know what?

Sometimes the best night could be at a rest stop in Iowa.

There’s something oddly peaceful about pulling off the highway after a long day of driving. You find a spot, shut everything down, and suddenly the constant hum of travel is over for the day.

The trucks keep coming and going. A few parking-lot lights glow in the darkness. Somewhere nearby, another traveler is doing exactly what you’re doing—getting a little sleep before putting more miles behind them tomorrow.

Nothing fancy.

Nothing planned.

Just a safe place to stop.

Then morning arrives.

The sky slowly turns blue. The lights are still glowing. The grass is wet with dew, the highway hasn’t quite found its daytime rhythm yet, and you step outside with that first cup of coffee.

For a few minutes, Iowa feels pretty darn peaceful.

That’s one of the things I’ve come to appreciate about roaming: you stop measuring a good day by where you slept.

Some nights are beautiful vistas.

Some are secret boondocking spots you’ll remember for years.

Some are tucked behind a business or spent listening to semis idle nearby.

And sometimes it’s an Iowa rest stop that gives you exactly what you needed—a quiet night, a little rest, and another sunrise reminding you that you’re still out here doing it.

The road doesn’t always have to be spectacular.

Sometimes you just need a place to stop long enough to appreciate where you are.

Coffee’s ready. Iowa is waking up. Time to see where the road goes next.
