The Rolling Office
Some offices have a view of the parking lot.

Mine changes every few days.
Today I’m writing this from my van, parked somewhere in Ohio on my way to Colorado. Outside the window is another snapshot of America passing by. In a few days, the flat fields will give way to mountains, and my office window will have an entirely different view.
That’s one of my favorite things about working on the road.
The van isn’t just transportation—it’s my office. It’s outfitted with a dedicated workspace, a second monitor, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a bed. Everything I need to write code during the day and chase new adventures when I close the laptop.
I don’t have to choose between building software and exploring the country.
I get to do both.
Some days are all about work. I’ll spend hours solving programming problems, tracking down elusive bugs, or building new features. Other days are about the adventure waiting outside the door. A hike. A bike ride. A scenic overlook that wasn’t on the original plan. A small town I’d never heard of until I drove through it.
Most days are a little of both.
I love the rhythm of it.
Coffee brews in the kitchen while I review my morning tasks. The second monitor lights up, headphones go on, and for a few hours it’s just me and the code. Then I’ll step outside, stretch my legs, and realize I’m somewhere completely different than I was yesterday.
Changing locations has a funny way of changing your perspective too.
When I’m stuck on a difficult problem, sometimes the best thing I can do isn’t stare at the screen longer. It’s to take a walk, watch a sunset, or simply enjoy whatever view happens to be outside my window that day. More often than not, the solution comes somewhere between the fresh air and the next cup of coffee.
The best part is that adventure doesn’t have to wait until retirement or a two-week vacation.
Sometimes adventure is simply where you parked for the day.
Colorado is the destination this time, but honestly, the journey is just as much a part of the experience. Every stop has its own story. Every parking lot, campground, or quiet corner becomes today’s office. Tomorrow it’ll be somewhere else.
My goats are back home holding down the fort.
I’ll handle the code.
The road can take care of the inspiration.
